Intro to Interviews

An important aspect of preparing for your career or next step professionally, is getting familiar with how the interview process works.

Step #1: Get clear on what you are looking for, and what is expected of you.

What do you want to do?

Before we dive into the different types of interviews, it's important that you figure out what kind of work you are even interested in doing. Reviewing your results from the career interest assessment in your Career Services workshops will assist you in this step. Learning what the expectations are around qualifications for the role you wish to will also help you in navigating the job search.

Step #2: Review the different types of interviews

Informational Interview

This type of interview is all about exploration. Exploring what kind of education, job, or career field is best for you. This video will sum it up a bit better for you.

Informational Interview Reflection Questions

Now that you've watched the video, allow yourself to think through some of these reflection questions:

How would attending an informational interview benefit your career or education goals in the field of your choice?
Do you know of anyone who is currently in the role or in the career field you are interested in exploring?
What are a few things you'd need to get a job in the field you chose?

Mock Interview

This style of interview is designed to give you the space to get comfortable with the interviewing process, but with less pressure than an actual job interview. Usually your interviewer will give feedback on what you did well and what could be improved. Think of it as a practice run!

Job Interview

This type of interview's primary intention is to land you a role that you would succeed in and enjoy.
