Youth Pass
YouthPass is a program that provides access to the MBTA (bus, subway, commuter rail) at a reduced cost for low-income people between the ages of 12-25 in Boston.
STEP #1: know what youthpass is
YouthPass is a card you receive that will qualify you for reduced cost public transportation rates.
These rates come in two forms:
Unlimited Monthly MBTA Pass
Available to buy on the first of each month at T kiosks under "Passes." You have to renew it each month.
Reduced Commuter Rail Fare
Enter your YouthPass card number in the "My Account" on the mTicket app.
STEP #2: check your eligibility
To be eligible for Boston's YouthPass, you must meet the following criteria:
Live in Boston
Be between 12 and 25
NOT be enrolled in middle or high school
And receive benefits through:
An approved state or federal program (e.g. MassHealth, SNAP)
An alternative education program (e.g. Hi-SET program)
A job training or professional development program (e.g. MTW!)
If you don't live in Boston, there's a chance your town has its own YouthPass program. Check out your town's eligibility criteria here.
STEP #3: fill out the intake form
Before being able to apply for the YouthPass, they will ask you to submit your information through an intake form.
STEP #4: submit your application
Once you have been approved for eligibility, use the link in the email to complete the application and upload your documents. (Tip: You can take pictures of your documents on your phone--you don't need a scanner to do this!)
Once your application is logged, you will either be marked as "Approved" or having submitted "Incomplete." If your application is not approved, you can contact them at mbtayouthpass@boston.gov to follow up.
STEP #5: get your card in the mail
After your application is approved, you will receive your pass in the mail within two weeks. As soon as you get it, you can use it on the mTicket app or at Charlie Card kiosks to buy reduced fares and monthly passes.
STEP #6: re-enroll every fall
All YouthPass monthly passes expire every October 31st. Each year, you will be emailed requests to re-enroll, and mailed a new card if you are still eligible.
