QUALIFICATIONS:
Have a high school diploma or Hi-SET.
Be at least 18 years old in some instances
BEGIN YOUR STUDIES:
If you liked a fast-paced job that involves both interacting with customers and working as a team, the food service industry is one that might be a good fit for you. Entry level positions are expected to increase in the next decade and there is room for advancement in this profession based upon performance. You will most likely have to work long hours and have a non-traditional schedule (evenings and weekends), so you must really be passionate about the job to excel.
SCHOOL PROGRAMS:
Boston has a handful of culinary training options ranging from workforce development programs to getting your Associate’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree that will lead to positions such as restaurant and line cooks, restaurant management, and hospitality management. There are a range of options for you to EXPLORE to decide if this might be the type of pathway you want to pursue.
Your Job Path
Restaurant Cook
Completion of a 4 or more month certification program that will then open up job opportunities at local restaurants, colleges, and more.
Average starting salary = $35,000 with some benefits. Average mean salary = $42,000 with some benefits.

Completion of a one year certification program or associate’s degree by an accredited institution.
Average starting salary = $50,000 with benefits. Average mean salary = $75,000 with benefits.

Completion of a two year associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution
Average starting salary = $55,000 with benefits. Average mean salary = $96,000 with benefits.
